About this position
TU Delft is advertising a Postdoc in Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) for Land Data Assimilation within the M-WAVE team and the international CROPWAVES project.
The project aims to improve global-scale crop and climate models by integrating satellite data, especially soil moisture and vegetation products, to better understand crop growth, crop failure, and food-security risks under climate change.
The successful candidate will work at the Department of Geoscience and Remote Sensing, Faculty of Civil Engineering and Geosciences, and collaborate closely with Prof. Susan Steele-Dunne and her team. The role focuses on developing a machine learning-based forward operator to enable assimilation of SAR imagery into a crop growth model.
Research tasks include processing SAR imagery across multiple European study domains, preparing satellite and ancillary datasets, developing and validating the forward-operator framework, maintaining project data/software, contributing to reporting and project management, publishing in peer-reviewed journals, and presenting at workshops and conferences.
Eligibility highlights: a PhD in Earth Observation, Geodesy, or a closely related field; experience with SAR processing tools such as SNAP or PolSARPro; agricultural SAR applications; machine learning for regression; Python or similar scientific programming; and strong English communication and publication skills.
Funding and conditions: this is a 9-month temporary postdoctoral contract with a salary of €3546–€5538 per month, 38–40 hours per week, and standard TU Delft/Dutch university employment benefits.
Application deadline: 27 September 2026. Apply online and upload a CV, cover letter, MSc/PhD transcripts, and preferably a copy of your PhD thesis. Shortlisted applicants will later provide at least three references.
