PostDoc in Urban Planning at the Swiss Federal Institute for Forest, Snow and Landscape Research WSL

This is a 2-year postdoctoral opening in the Land Use Systems Group within the Land Change Science research unit at WSL, part of the ETH Domain. The position is embedded in the SNSF-funded UNSEAL project, “Understanding and enabling the transition towards reverting soil sealing for improving urban biodiversity and nature-based solutions.”

The project focuses on comparative case study research on soil desealing and urban planning across Europe. The successful candidate will investigate how urban planning can support the transformation of paved areas into green spaces, identify planning instruments and governance approaches that enable soil desealing, and contribute to dissemination and joint publications with international partners.

Research areas and keywords: urban planning, spatial planning, governance, planning and policy analysis, stakeholder engagement, comparative case studies, document analysis, semi-structured interviews, urban biodiversity, nature-based solutions, land-use systems.

Eligibility highlights: applicants should hold a PhD in spatial planning, governance, or a related field. Experience with European planning systems, policy analysis, stakeholder engagement, and qualitative methods is required. Strong communication and organisational skills, team spirit, and fluency in English are essential. Experience in interdisciplinary teams and knowledge of German, Hungarian, Greek, Romanian, or Dutch are considered an advantage.

Funding and appointment: this is a paid postdoc position at 80–100% for 2 years. The post is funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF) through the UNSEAL project. No stipend amount is stated in the post.
