About this position

Postdoc opportunity at the European Synchrotron Radiation Facility (ESRF), Grenoble, France. The ID10-SURF beamline in the X-ray Diffraction and Scattering Group is seeking a postdoctoral researcher to join work on surface and interface science using X-ray surface scattering techniques.

The project focuses on the interactions between biological membrane mimics at liquid interfaces and macromolecules, including polymers and proteins. The successful candidate will participate in beamline operation, support external users as local contact, and develop an independent research programme. The role also includes contributing to advanced data analysis strategies for surface X-ray scattering data and to the development of beamline-specific sample cells.

Research topics at the station include X-ray reflectivity (XRR), grazing-incidence wide-angle scattering (GIWAXS), grazing-incidence small-angle scattering (GISAXS), X-ray fluorescence (XRF), and X-ray absorption near edge structure (XANES). The beamline’s double crystal deflector enables studies of liquid surfaces and buried interfaces. Current in-house themes include Langmuir films mimicking cell membranes, nanoparticle assembly at liquid interfaces, and catalysis, including CVD growth of 2D materials on liquid metal catalysts and Fischer–Tropsch synthesis.

Eligibility highlights: PhD in Physics, Chemistry, or a closely related field obtained within the last 3 years; strong instrumentation and data analysis skills; relevant experience with scattering techniques; basic scattering modelling knowledge; and programming experience in Python or MATLAB.

What's required
