About this position
The Center for medical Image Analysis and Navigation (CIAN) group at the Department of Biomedical Engineering, University of Basel, is offering a fully funded PostDoc position focused on Artificial Intelligence for Automated Medical Reporting. Led by Prof. Dr. Philippe C. Cattin, this interdisciplinary team works at the intersection of artificial intelligence, natural language processing (NLP), and medical informatics. The research aims to develop agentic AI systems that automate the generation of structured medical reports, impacting clinical workflows and research documentation.
Key responsibilities include designing AI-driven pipelines to generate pre-structured medical reports from minimal input data, integrating AI solutions into robust and reproducible systems, and validating performance, accuracy, and safety with a focus on clinical relevance. The position involves investigating questions such as the minimal input required for high-quality domain-specific reports, autonomous literature curation for dynamic report generation, and ensuring traceability and explainability in AI-generated medical documentation. Collaboration with clinicians and domain experts is encouraged to align technical solutions with real-world needs.
Applicants must have a Ph.D. in Computer Science, Artificial Intelligence, Data Science, Biomedical Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent experience. Essential skills include strong Python programming, familiarity with NLP/LLM frameworks (e.g., Hugging Face, LangChain), software engineering practices, and experience with data pipelines. Candidates should possess excellent English communication skills, a research mindset, and enthusiasm for interdisciplinary teamwork. German language skills are a plus but not required.
The position is fully funded for two years, offering a competitive salary according to Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF) guidelines. The University of Basel provides access to high-performance computing resources, collaborations with clinical partners such as University Hospital Basel, mentorship from Prof. Cattin, and opportunities to shape research direction. Flexible working conditions and a supportive team culture are emphasized.
To apply, submit a motivation letter, CV (including publications), transcripts (Bachelor's and Master's degrees), and contact details for two references via the application portal by May 15, 2026. The University of Basel is an equal opportunity employer and encourages applications from underrepresented groups. For further information, contact Prof. Dr. Philippe C. Cattin at [email protected] or visit the CIAN group page.
