Postdoc Position in Safe AI, Alignment, and NLP at EPFL Data Science & AI Lab École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne in Switzerland

A postdoctoral position is available at the École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL) Data Science & AI Lab, led by Professor Robert West. The research focuses on safe AI, alignment, large language models (LLMs), natural language processing (NLP), and mechanistic interpretability. The goal is to develop AI systems that prioritize human interests, with a unique approach to alignment that integrates safety from the earliest stages of model training.

The successful candidate will contribute to the Swiss AI Initiative, particularly by incorporating research results into Apertus, SwissAI’s open, transparent, multilingual language model. The lab offers a stimulating, international environment with strong academic and industrial collaborations. The position includes opportunities to work with MS and PhD students and does not require involvement in teaching, though it is possible if desired.

Applicants should have completed or be near completion of a PhD in AI or NLP, with a strong international publication record. Strong programming skills and experience with machine learning frameworks are essential. English is the main language at EPFL, and no French language skills are required. The position offers a competitive salary (starting at CHF 88,000 per year), generous travel support, and is initially for one year with the expectation of extension to a second year upon mutual agreement. The ideal start date is Spring 2026, but there is flexibility.
