About this position

Postdoctoral Appointee in Autonomous SAXS Beamline Research at Argonne National Laboratory

Argonne National Laboratory’s X-ray Science Division is recruiting a postdoctoral researcher to work on autonomous experimentation at a small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) beamline. The project focuses on developing workflows and instrumentation for closed-loop experimentation at the Advanced Photon Source (APS) SAXS beamline, with an emphasis on wet-solution processes.

Research interests highlighted in the posting include critical-materials extraction and lipid nanoparticle assembly. The successful candidate will collaborate with scientists and engineers at APS and across Argonne, contributing to beamline experimentation, data analysis, automation, and scientific publication.

Core activities include developing and maintaining autonomous beamline capabilities, operating SAXS/WAXS and X-ray fluorescence (XRF) measurements at the APS 12-ID beamline, designing in situ and operando experiments, preparing synchrotron beamtime experiments, and building Python-based data-analysis and closed-loop decision-making workflows.

Eligibility highlights: applicants must hold a Ph.D. in Materials Science, Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, or a closely related field completed within the past 0–5 years. The role also requires experience with solution-phase SAXS, strong experimental skills, laboratory troubleshooting ability, Python proficiency, and strong communication skills. Preferred backgrounds include synchrotron characterization, solution chemistry, soft-matter systems, lipid nanoparticles, self-assembly, colloids, robotic synthesis, active learning, and autonomous materials discovery.

Funding and terms: this is a full-time long-term fixed-term postdoctoral appointment with an expected salary range of $72,879.00–$121,465.00 plus comprehensive benefits.

Location and deadline: the position is based in Lemont, Illinois, USA, at Argonne National Laboratory. Applications are due by 2026-10-25.

How to apply: submit an application through the Argonne Careers Workday posting. Review the job description carefully and apply before the deadline. For application support, contact [email protected].
