About this position
Argonne National Laboratory is hiring a Postdoctoral Appointee in Life Cycle Analysis at its campus in Lemont, Illinois, USA. This is a research-focused postdoctoral position in the LCA and Technology Assessment Department within the Energy Systems and Infrastructure Analysis Division.
The appointee will work on life cycle analysis, industrial process modeling, and critical minerals and materials assessment, with a strong emphasis on batteries, minerals, materials, and energy systems. Research tasks include building transparent parameterized models for mineral extraction, concentration, refining, chemical conversion, battery-material production, and recycling; compiling life-cycle inventories from literature, technical reports, patents, industrial sources, and supplier data; translating industrial processes into material and energy balances; and implementing models in Argonne’s GREET model and related analytical tools.
The role also involves evaluating production pathways such as lithium from brines and hard-rock resources, lithium carbonate and lithium hydroxide production, hydrometallurgical processes, and battery recycling. The successful candidate will use sensitivity, uncertainty, and scenario analyses to identify key process and supply-chain drivers, manage technical datasets, contribute to model/database updates, and prepare technical reports, peer-reviewed publications, presentations, and conference materials.
Eligibility highlights: a recent or soon-to-be-completed Ph.D. (typically within the last 0–5 years) in chemical engineering, materials science, industrial engineering, or a related field; programming skills in Python, JavaScript, and Excel; knowledge of process modeling and life cycle analysis; familiarity with critical materials production processes; experience with large datasets; understanding of energy technologies and supply chains; and experience with Argonne’s GREET and BatPaC models. Knowledge of Aspen Plus or similar tools is also preferred.
Funding: full-time postdoctoral appointment with an expected salary range of $72,879–$121,465 plus comprehensive benefits.
How to apply: submit an application through the Argonne Careers Workday portal using the job link. The post notes that the position requires on-site presence at the Argonne campus in Lemont, Illinois. For application support, contact [email protected].
