About this position

Argonne National Laboratory is advertising an immediate postdoctoral appointee opening in the Applied Materials Division for research in mechanical engineering and materials science.

The project focuses on developing physics-based models to predict the structure and performance of materials under extreme conditions. The successful candidate will work with a multidisciplinary team using the MOOSE multiphysics finite element framework to build processing-to-structure models for additively manufactured metallic and ceramic materials, and structure-to-performance models based on crystal plasticity finite element methods and related micromechanical theories.

The role is especially relevant for candidates interested in finite element modeling, micromechanics, additive manufacturing, advanced ceramics, and the high-temperature performance of metal alloys. The postdoc will also apply these models to predict engineering behavior in service environments.

Eligibility highlights: a recent or soon-to-be-completed PhD (typically within the last 0–5 years) in mechanical engineering, materials science, civil engineering, structural engineering, or a closely related field; experience with micromechanical modeling; strong numerical methods background; and coding skills in C++ and/or Python. Strong communication and presentation skills are required. Preferred experience includes MOOSE, model fitting to test data, machine learning, and Bayesian optimization.

Location: Lemont, Illinois, United States. The position requires on-site presence at Argonne campus five days per week.

Funding: full-time postdoctoral appointment with an expected salary range of $72,879 to $121,465, plus benefits.

How to apply: submit an application through the Argonne Workday careers portal using the provided job link. Review the posting carefully for full details and application instructions.

What's required

Recent or soon-to-be-completed PhD, typically completed within the last 0-5 years, in mechanical engineering, materials science, civil engineering, structural engineering, or a closely related field. Applicants should have expertise in micromechanical model formulation and implementation, ideally crystal plasticity methods, strong numerical methods skills for finite element-based physics models, and coding experience in C++ and/or Python with responsible use of AI-assisted coding tools. Strong oral and written communication and presentation skills are required. The role requires on-site presence at Argonne campus in Lemont, Illinois, five days per week. Preferred experience includes MOOSE, fitting physics-based models to test data, machine learning, Bayesian optimization, and modeling advanced ceramics or high-temperature metal alloys.
