About this position

Argonne National Laboratory is advertising an immediate postdoctoral opening in Mechanical Engineering within the Applied Materials Division. The project centers on high-temperature structural materials for nuclear reactors and other energy systems, with a strong emphasis on developing and validating design methods and models for predicting the reliability of high-temperature structural components.

The successful candidate will work with Argonne staff on continuum damage mechanics, statistical reliability models, and engineering methods that improve the safety and reliability of critical components. The role also includes contributing to technical reports, conference papers, journal publications, and presentations at technical conferences.

Academic background: recent or soon-to-be-completed PhD (typically within the last 0–5 years) in mechanical engineering, materials science, civil engineering, structural engineering, or a closely related field.

Required experience: finite element simulations, constitutive model development, knowledge of high-temperature creep crack growth, familiarity with engineering design codes (ASME Boiler & Pressure Vessel Code, API standards, R5, RCC-MRx, or similar), Python coding, and strong communication skills.

Preferred experience: fracture mechanics-based reliability modeling, structure-property relations for metallic and ceramic materials, engineering design for high-temperature components, and the MOOSE finite element simulation framework.

Location: on-site at Argonne’s campus in Lemont, Illinois, USA.

Funding: full-time postdoctoral appointment with an expected salary range of $72,879–$121,465 plus benefits.

How to apply: submit an application through the Argonne Careers/Workday posting. The page provides the direct application link and Argonne contact email for application support.
