About this position

Sandia National Laboratories is hiring a Postdoctoral Appointee in Shock Physics for an onsite role in Livermore, California, United States.

This postdoctoral opening sits within the Mechanics of Materials Department and the shock physics group, where the team studies the dynamic response of materials under extreme environments. The work emphasizes shock compression science, experimental shock physics, computational shock physics, materials science, physics, and related engineering fields.

Typical responsibilities include experimental design for shock compression studies of heterogeneous materials, fabrication and characterization of target assemblies, analysis of diagnostics such as PDV, PVDF, PZT, radiographic and high-speed imaging data, Linux-based hydrocode workflows, model calibration, and coordination of experiments at internal and external user facilities.

Required qualifications include a PhD in Materials Science, Aerospace Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Physics, or a closely related discipline, plus deep understanding of shock compression science and dynamic material response. The selected applicant must be able to work onsite and must be eligible to obtain and maintain a DOE Q-level security clearance, which requires U.S. citizenship. The PhD must have been conferred within five years prior to employment.

Desired experience includes gas-gun, explosive, or pulsed-power shock experiments; hydrocodes/FEA/plasticity; flash X-ray, proton radiography, and high-speed optical/video diagnostics; VISAR/PDV, DIC, pyrometry, and strain gauges; quantitative image analysis; and strong publication and communication skills.

This is a temporary postdoctoral appointment for up to one year, with possible renewal at Sandia’s discretion for up to five additional years. Sandia mentions competitive benefits and relocation assistance, but no salary amount is listed.

How to apply: submit your application through the Sandia job portal using the Apply Now link. Review the resume best-practices guidance before applying.

Application window: the posting is open for at least three calendar days from the posting date.
