About this position
Karlstad University invites applications for a postdoctoral appointment in gender studies, based within the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences and the Department of Social and Psychological Studies. The university, located in scenic Värmland, Sweden, is committed to gender equality, diversity, and sustainable development, offering a stimulating academic environment for both students and staff. The department is multidisciplinary, encompassing Sociology, Social Work, Psychology, and Gender Studies, with around eight researchers and teachers actively engaged in research and education.
This postdoctoral position is part of the interdisciplinary research project "Strategic litigation as an advocacy tool: Experiences of Litigating Women’s Rights in Peru and South Africa." The project aims to investigate why women’s rights organizations in the Global South increasingly use strategic litigation to advocate for women’s rights, and to explore the challenges faced in cases related to sexual and reproductive health rights and gender-based violence. The research will focus on the interplay between legal and coalition strategies to promote sustainable social change through legal avenues.
As a postdoctoral fellow, you will primarily dedicate your time to research, working closely with the project team and collaborative partners in South Africa and Peru. Responsibilities include planning, collecting, and processing qualitative data, analyzing interviews and legal documents, reporting and disseminating findings, and publishing at least two scientific articles as lead author. You will also participate in seminars, support the development of research projects, and contribute to the academic environment. Teaching duties are included but will not exceed 20% of full-time.
The position is full-time and fixed-term for two years and seven months, with a monthly salary and excellent conditions for researchers, as evidenced by the university's HR Excellence in Research award. The role combines independent research with active participation in the academic community and aims to make research relevant and accessible beyond the university, including through popular scientific communication.
Eligibility requires a PhD in law, gender legal studies, legal sociology, or an equivalent qualification from abroad, completed no more than three years before the application deadline (exceptions for special grounds such as sick leave, parental leave, etc.). Applicants must demonstrate proficiency in English, both spoken and written, and the ability to conduct high-quality, independent research. Experience with qualitative methods, feminist legal theory, and research in Southern Africa (especially South Africa) is valued. Teaching experience and training in higher education pedagogy are considered assets.
To apply, submit your application via the university's web-based recruitment tool, Varbi, by 15 August 2026. Ensure your application is complete and includes all required documents, such as a cover letter, CV, publications, proof of PhD, language skills, and a research plan. Documents not submitted electronically should be sent to the HR administrator at Karlstad University. For further information, contact Anna-Britt Coe or Erik Wästlund. The university is committed to fair and transparent recruitment and professional development for researchers.
