About this position

Postdoctoral Associate in Bioengineering at Rice University in Houston, Texas, United States.

The Biophotonics Instrumentation Laboratory in the Department of Bioengineering at Rice University is seeking a postdoctoral researcher to develop advanced optical instrumentation for imaging and sensing applications. The project focuses on the design, fabrication, integration, and evaluation of hyperspectral snapshot imaging systems for remote sensing, combining optics, opto-mechanics, electronics, software, and experimental system development.

This is a hands-on research role in applied optics, optical engineering, imaging, biophotonics, image processing, and data analysis. The successful candidate will contribute to bench testing, optical alignment, component characterization, hardware control, fabrication/prototyping, manuscript preparation, proposal development, and collaboration with students and other research personnel.

Eligibility: a Ph.D. in optical engineering, imaging, applied optics, or a closely related field is required. No additional experience beyond graduate research is required. Preferred experience includes optical design, experimental optical lab work, system alignment, optical shop testing, hardware control, prototyping methods such as 3D printing/CNC/laser cutting, and characterization tools such as optical profilers, Fizeau interferometers, or refractometers.

Funding: one-year, benefits-eligible appointment funded by a grant and soft/restricted funds, with possible renewal based on funding, research needs, and performance. Hiring range: $62,232. Three postdoctoral positions are available.

Location: on-site at Rice University in Houston, Texas. Anticipated start date is between August 1, 2026 and October 1, 2026. Apply via the Rice University careers portal and attach a resume, preferably in PDF format.
