About this position

Broad Institute is recruiting a Postdoctoral Associate in Computational and Experimental Functional Genomics in Rare Disease within the Neal Laboratory and the Broad Institute’s Novo Nordisk Foundation Center for Genomic Mechanisms of Disease.

This role is centered on rare disease, functional genomics, quantitative imaging, computational biology, and drug discovery. The project, called Project Encore, is supported by an NIH Director’s Transformative Research Award and aims to build scalable therapeutic discovery approaches for rare genetic diseases using barcoded variant libraries, multiplexed cell imaging, in situ barcode sequencing, and large-scale compound-variant screening.

The successful candidate will work across experimental and computational workflows to ask how disease phenotypes should be measured, how rescue should be defined, and how phenotypes and drug responses can reveal shared biology across diseases. The position emphasizes independent research, method development, and the ability to connect experimental design with analytical discovery.

Eligibility highlights: a Ph.D. in computational biology, bioengineering, systems biology, biophysics, cell or molecular biology, or a related field; substantial hands-on experience in mammalian cell culture, molecular biology, and fluorescence microscopy; and proficiency in Python and/or R with experience analyzing biological datasets and building reproducible workflows. Preferred experience includes high-content image analysis, quantitative cell profiling, computer vision, statistical modeling, machine learning, pooled genetic screens, lentiviral transduction, barcoded libraries, multiplexed imaging, in situ sequencing, and cloud/HPC analysis.

Funding: full-time paid postdoctoral role with a base salary range of $70,000–$92,666.67 per year, plus Broad Institute benefits. The posting also notes support for postdoctoral researchers applying for external fellowships.

Location: on-site at the Broad Institute in Cambridge, MA, United States.

Application: submit a CV, three references, and a brief cover letter describing your research interests, prior experimental/computational contributions, and a bridging research question. Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis until filled.

What's required

A Ph.D. in computational biology, bioengineering, systems biology, biophysics, cell or molecular biology, or a related field is required. Candidates need substantial hands-on experimental experience including mammalian cell culture, molecular biology, and fluorescence microscopy. Proficiency in Python and/or R is required, along with independent analysis of biological datasets and reproducible workflows. Applicants should demonstrate the ability to connect computational findings with biological questions, communicate across disciplines, troubleshoot research problems, and advance a project independently, ideally evidenced by first-author publications or preprints. Experience with high-content image analysis, quantitative cell profiling, computer vision, statistical modeling, machine learning, pooled genetic screens, lentiviral transduction, barcoded libraries, multiplexed imaging, in situ sequencing, or cloud/HPC analysis is preferred.

How to apply

Submit a CV, contact information for three references, and a brief cover letter. In the cover letter, describe your research interests, your experimental and computational contributions, and a question you would want to pursue that bridges both areas. Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis until the position is filled.
