About this position
University of Alaska Southeast is inviting applications for a Postdoctoral Associate in Glaciology based in Juneau, Alaska, United States. The project focuses on glaciology, hydrology, and glacier outburst flood modeling, with the goal of constraining uncertainty in flood forecasts for Mendenhall Glacier. The work supports urgent efforts to understand and predict repeated outburst floods that have damaged infrastructure in Juneau.
The postdoc will work on hydrological modeling, flood forecasting, and future flood trajectory analysis, and will collaborate with partners at the USGS and the National Weather Service. The project uses a robust monitoring system including stream gauge measurements, basin water-level measurements, and repeat drone surveys, and the position will also assist with monitoring efforts.
Eligibility highlights: applicants must hold a PhD in glaciology, hydrology, or a related field; have a peer-reviewed publication record appropriate to experience; demonstrate excellent communication skills; have programming experience; and have experience with field data acquisition and/or analysis. Applicants must be legally authorized to work in the United States without restriction.
Funding: the position is term-funded by the US Forest Service for one year, with a possibility of one-year extension. It is a full-time postdoctoral role with a competitive salary and full employee benefits package, including retirement options, annual leave, paid holidays, and tuition waivers for employees and family members.
Deadline: full consideration by September 1, 2026; the position remains open until filled. Anticipated start date is November 1, 2026.
Contact: Jason Amundson ([email protected]) for questions.
