Postdoctoral Fellow for the FWO-WEAVE Project 'Aristotle on Soul and Senses: Exchanges between Latin and Greek Transmissions of De anima and De sensu' (EXDADS) KU Leuven

KU Leuven is inviting applications for a 3-year postdoctoral fellowship in the FWO-WEAVE project Aristotle on Soul and Senses: Exchanges between Latin and Greek Transmissions of De anima and De sensu (EXDADS). The project is a collaboration between KU Leuven and the University of Tübingen and is led by Lisa Devriese and Pieter Beullens at KU Leuven, together with Klaus Corcilius at Tübingen.

The project investigates the medieval Latin translations of Aristotle’s De anima and De sensu, their Greek sources, and the exchanges between the Latin and Greek textual traditions. The successful candidate will focus on preparing a critical edition of the Latin translation of De sensu, working closely with the Leuven team and with a parallel postdoctoral researcher in Tübingen who will work on the Latin translation of De anima.

The postdoctoral fellow will conduct independent research as part of the EXDADS team, contribute to common project activities such as team meetings, presentations, and conferences, and participate in the wider research activities of the De Wulf-Mansion Centre for Ancient, Medieval and Renaissance Studies. The position is embedded in a broader network including the ERC Starting Grant FitMA at KU Leuven, the ERC Advanced Grant TIDA at Universität Tübingen, and the international Aristoteles Latinus project.

Applicants should hold a PhD in Arts, Philosophy, or another relevant subject with excellent results, or be able to obtain the PhD before the start of the employment. Strong academic English and excellent Latin and ancient Greek are required. Experience in medieval palaeography and critical editing of medieval Latin texts is advantageous. The project is especially suited to candidates interested in ancient and medieval philosophy, classical philology, textual criticism, and the transmission of Aristotelian works.

The fellowship is offered under KU Leuven’s standard postdoctoral conditions and includes training opportunities, social and health benefits, and office space. Remote working may be possible within KU Leuven rules if it does not interfere with team responsibilities. The preferred starting date is 1 October 2026, and the application deadline is 17 August 2026.
