About this position

Indiana University School of Medicine is advertising a Postdoctoral Fellow in Auditory Genetics and In Vivo Functional Genomics in the Department of Medical and Molecular Genetics, based in Indianapolis, Indiana, United States.

The Azaiez-Booth Laboratory studies the genetic and molecular mechanisms underlying human disease, with a major focus on genetic hearing loss and the functional biology of the auditory system. The project area combines human genetics, molecular biology, genome editing, functional genomics, and in vivo disease modeling to understand how genetic perturbations affect auditory function and to explore therapeutic strategies.

The postdoctoral fellow will contribute to and help expand the lab’s in vivo auditory genetics program. Research opportunities include generation and characterization of mouse models, somatic CRISPR/Cas genome editing, auditory phenotyping (including auditory brainstem response and otoacoustic-emission measurements), inner-ear tissue collection, histology, immunofluorescence, quantitative imaging, cochlear and inner-ear experimental approaches, molecular characterization of perturbed tissues, and development of gene-regulatory or gene-based therapeutic approaches.

This position is well suited to candidates interested in connecting human genetic discoveries to organismal phenotypes through mouse models, auditory physiology, and translational genomics. The lab offers mentorship in experimental design, manuscript preparation, scientific communication, fellowship and grant writing, mentoring, and career development. Fellows are encouraged to develop an independent niche, lead projects, present at meetings, contribute to grant applications, and pursue individual fellowship or career-development funding.

Eligibility: Applicants must hold a Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree in genetics, neuroscience, auditory biology, molecular biology, physiology, biomedical sciences, or a related field by the start date. Experience with mouse models is required. Prior inner-ear biology experience is preferred but not required; training in specialized inner-ear techniques can be provided. Helpful experience includes mouse handling, microsurgery, auditory or sensory physiology, mouse genetics, CRISPR/Cas, AAV or other gene-delivery methods, histology, immunofluorescence, confocal microscopy, molecular biology, and gene-expression analysis.

How to apply: Submit a CV, a letter of application with a brief statement of research interests and career goals, and contact information for three references through the Indiana University academic careers portal. Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis until the position is filled.
