About this position

Postdoctoral Fellow in Computational Mathematics at Stockholm University, Sweden.

The Division of Computational Mathematics in the Department of Mathematics is seeking a highly motivated postdoctoral researcher to work on time-stepping schemes for simulations of glacial ice dynamics. The project combines numerical analysis, scientific computing, finite element methods, and partial differential equations with an application to ice-sheet modelling and climate-related prediction.

The research aims to improve and analyse a stabilized time-stepping method that enables larger time steps for ice dynamics simulations. The successful candidate will study convergence theory for a free-boundary problem coupled to the Stokes equations, then develop an adaptive algorithm that selects the largest time step while preserving accuracy. The work also includes implementation and testing in Elmer/Ice and numerical experiments such as applications to the Ryder Glacier in northern Greenland.

Eligibility highlights: applicants must hold a Swedish doctoral degree or an equivalent doctoral degree from another country, completed by the time the employment decision is made. A foreign doctoral degree outside Sweden or equivalent is required. Strong background in numerical analysis or scientific computing is expected, with experience in time-stepping methods and FEM; experience with fluid dynamics, solid mechanics, moving-boundary problems, or Earth-science applications is an advantage.

Employment is full-time for 2–3 years, with possible extension under special circumstances. Salary is individually set. The position is based in Stockholm at the Albano campus.
