About this position
Postdoctoral Fellow opening in computational structural biology at the National Cancer Institute (NCI), within the Cancer Innovation Laboratory. The project focuses on uncovering the molecular mechanisms of oncogenic proteins and identifying targetable vulnerabilities using high-performance computing and large-scale molecular dynamics simulations.
The research is centered on protein conformational ensembles, activation and autoinhibition, allosteric communication, transient/cryptic pockets, protein-protein interactions, and signaling complexes. The fellow will work at the interface of structural biology, molecular biophysics, computational biology, bioinformatics, and cancer research, with opportunities to contribute to precision oncology and therapeutic targeting.
Typical project directions include all-atom simulations of oncogenic proteins and complexes, conformational landscape and free-energy analysis, mechanistic study of mutations, and integration of structural and simulation data to identify druggable weaknesses. The environment is multidisciplinary and collaborative, with access to NCI/NIH resources.
Eligibility: applicants should hold a Ph.D. or equivalent in computational biology, biophysics, biochemistry, chemistry, physics, structural biology, bioinformatics, computer science, or a closely related field. Candidates nearing completion may apply if the degree is finished before employment begins. Applicants with a doctorate must have no more than three years of postdoctoral experience. Strong analytical, independent, and communication skills are important; first-author publication is preferred.
Funding: training position with a starting stipend of $68,544. The role is full-time and in-person.
Location: Bethesda, United States.
How to apply: submit a CV/resume, cover letter, and three references. Reference letters must be sent confidentially by referees directly to Dr. Ruth Nussinov. Applications are considered until the position is filled.

What's required
Applicants should have a Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree in computational biology, biophysics, biochemistry, chemistry, physics, structural biology, bioinformatics, computer science, or a closely related field. Candidates nearing degree completion may apply, but must have the qualification before employment can begin. Those holding a Ph.D. or other advanced degree must not have more than three years of postdoctoral experience. Strong mechanistic thinking, ability to critically analyze complex data, work independently, and communicate clearly are important. Preferred experience includes molecular dynamics, high-performance computing, simulation packages such as NAMD, AMBER, GROMACS, CHARMM, or OpenMM, statistical mechanics, protein conformational dynamics, free-energy landscapes, structural analysis, Python, Linux/Unix, enhanced sampling, free-energy calculations, Markov state models, machine learning, GPU computing, protein-ligand interactions, drug-binding-pocket analysis, or cancer signaling. First-author publication preferred.
How to apply
Prepare a CV/resume, cover letter, and three references. Submit the application materials as instructed for the CCR/NCI posting. Reference letters should be sent confidentially by referees directly to Dr. Ruth Nussinov, not by the applicant.
