About this position

The Stier Lab at Vanderbilt University Medical Center is recruiting a postdoctoral fellow to study human immune resilience under physiologic and metabolic stress. The project uses sepsis and other critical illness syndromes as clinically important disease states and as perturbations to uncover fundamental mechanisms of immunobiology with translational potential.

The main research direction will investigate how stress reshapes human immune cell function using large-scale genetic perturbation screens in primary human T cells. Methods include pooled and arrayed CRISPR approaches, functional metabolic phenotyping, and deep mechanistic follow-up of candidate genes. This is a strong fit for candidates interested in immunology, immunometabolism, functional genomics, cell biology, and quantitative approaches.

Additional possible projects include cellular and molecular mechanisms of bone marrow dysfunction in sepsis, biophysical regulation of immunometabolism, novel applications of stable isotope tracing in humans, and other directions aligned with the fellow’s interests and expertise. The fellow will join a collaborative research environment with opportunities to shape projects, learn new techniques, and build scientific independence.

Eligibility: applicants should hold a PhD or equivalent in immunology, metabolism, cell or molecular biology, functional genomics, computational biology, or a related field. Experience with immunology, metabolism, CRISPR/functional genomics, primary cell biology, single-cell analysis, or quantitative methods is desirable. The lab seeks curious, rigorous, independent, and collaborative scientists.

Application: send a cover letter (max 1 page), CV, and contact information for 2–3 professional references to [email protected]. The position is available immediately with a flexible start date and is reviewed on a rolling basis until filled.
