About this position
Postdoctoral Fellow in Integrative Taxonomy: Plant Genomics and AI at Naturalis Biodiversity Center in Leiden, Netherlands.
This postdoctoral opportunity sits at the intersection of biodiversity, botany, plant genomics, bioinformatics, and artificial intelligence. The successful candidate will work with the Tropical Botany group (Dr. Angelica Cibrian Jaramillo, Dr. Paola De Lima Ferreira) and collaborate with Dr. Rutger Vos and the Data Competence Center to develop genome-wide and AI-enabled approaches for species identification and delimitation.
The project aims to improve integrative taxonomy for difficult plant families by identifying novel genomic regions, building and implementing bioinformatic pipelines, and exploring AI applications such as image recognition and training datasets from genomic data. The role is embedded in Naturalis programs including ARISE, AcellARISE, and eDentity, with a strong biodiversity-monitoring and research-impact focus.
Funding and conditions: full-time 1-year contract (36 hours/week). Salary is €3,768–€4,897 gross per month depending on experience, plus end-of-year bonus, 8% holiday pay, commuting allowance, pension contribution, leave, training access, and other employee benefits.
Eligibility highlights: completed PhD in genomics (preferably plant genomics), experience with sequencing technologies such as target enrichment or genome skimming, strong Bash/Python coding, Linux/HPC and Snakemake experience, public code repository link, and strong English. AI/ML experience, including neural networks and PyTorch, is advantageous.
How to apply: submit one PDF with your CV and motivation letter, plus two referees’ contact details and a code link, via the application button on AcademicTransfer. Deadline: 7 October 2026. For questions, contact the supervisors by email or HR at [email protected].
