About this position
Tohoku University’s WPI-Advanced Institute for Marine Ecosystem Change (WPI-AIMEC) is recruiting a Postdoctoral Fellow / NEXUS Postdoctoral Researcher to study how climate change affects marine ecosystems. The project focuses on the coupling of ocean circulation, marine biogeochemistry, and ecosystem responses under global warming, with opportunities to develop model simulations and contribute to collaborations in Japan and internationally.
The position is based at Tohoku University in Japan (Miyagi, Sendai). The appointment is a non-tenure-track regular employee role, starting around 2027-01-01 (negotiable), with an initial contract through 2027-03-31 and possible renewal depending on performance and budget.
Applicants should have a Ph.D. in a related field by the start date, or expect to obtain one by then, and must be within 5 years of Ph.D. completion. Preferred experience includes analytical research, Earth system model analysis, Python, and peer-reviewed international publications. Experience in modeling marine biogeochemistry, marine ecosystems, or ocean circulation is especially relevant.
Funding includes an annual salary of roughly JPY 6.0–7.0 million (up to JPY 6.6 million stated), transportation support, relocation allowances, and up to JPY 1,000,000 in research expenses. The role also includes insurance coverage and access to university lodging and childcare-related support.
Applications are due 2026-09-16. Submit the required online application materials, including a research summary, research plan, publication list, representative publications, reference contacts, and a DEI statement. Questions about the project may be directed to Keith Rodgers and Justin Penn.
