Postdoctoral Fellow in Multi-Agent Communication to Scaffold Learning Processes at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU)

NTNU’s Department of Computer Science in Trondheim is seeking a postdoctoral fellow for a full-time temporary position focused on AI for human learning. The appointment is connected to the newly established AI Centre for the Empowerment of Human Learning (AI LEARN), an interdisciplinary national center dedicated to responsible, human-centred artificial intelligence and hybrid intelligence.

The postdoctoral researcher will work on designing, developing, and evaluating AI agents, models, frameworks, and technologies that support personalized and adaptive learning experiences. A central theme is multi-agent communication for scaffolding learning processes and enhancing human learning. The project includes use of high-quality industry datasets for model fine-tuning and alignment, as well as extensive experimentation with partner organizations in schools and in the public and private sectors.

The role is research-intensive and collaborative. The fellow will produce academic publications, contribute to popular science dissemination, participate in the SE research group and the AI LEARN centre, support research funding applications, attend international conferences and research stays, mentor MSc and PhD students, and help organize dissemination and communication activities. The work is carried out in collaboration with a PhD student and involves communication with national and international partners, including industry and public sector collaborators.

The position is intended to strengthen a researcher profile and prepare the candidate for an academic career, including potential qualification for associate professor roles. NTNU states that the appointment may run for 3 or 4 years, depending on whether teaching and related duty work are included.

Eligibility highlights: Applicants must hold a PhD in Human-centred AI, Hybrid AI, or a closely related field such as Learning Analytics, Learning Technologies, Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning, or Interaction Design with Human–AI interaction as a central focus. Candidates who are close to completing the doctorate may still be considered if the thesis has been submitted or the defense date has been confirmed. Strong English communication skills are required, with formal evidence from TOEFL, IELTS, or Cambridge CAE/CPE. A strong publication record in leading venues such as LAK, AIED, CHI, C&A, BJET, or IEEE TLT is expected; experience with competitive research projects is an advantage, and Norwegian/Scandinavian language skills are preferred.

Funding and conditions: The position is funded through the AI LEARN centre and is conditional on the finalization of the Research Council of Norway grant agreement. The salary is normally NOK 633,400 gross per year before tax, with standard pension contributions deducted.
