About this position

Postdoctoral Fellow opportunity at The University of Texas at Austin in the Hildebrand Department of Petroleum and Geosystems Engineering, working with the UT-RAPID Industry Affiliate Program under the supervision of Dr. Eric van Oort.

This postdoctoral role focuses on research and development in well construction and drilling science, with special emphasis on ultra-deep geothermal wells, HPHT oil & gas systems, drilling automation, and autonomous well construction. The work also spans carbon storage, hydrogen exploration and production, and well re-use/re-purposing.

Research interests and keywords: petroleum engineering, drilling automation, computational mechanics, numerical modeling, fluid dynamics, phase behavior, control systems, AI/ML, well engineering, geomechanics, drilling hydraulics, drillstring and BHA dynamics, bit-rock interactions, and managed pressure drilling.

Eligibility highlights: applicants must hold a PhD received within the last three years and demonstrate strong expertise in computational and software methods, Python or C++, ANSYS, drilling systems, publication record, conference presentation experience, project management, and student supervision. Preferred experience includes AI/ML for drilling optimization and experimental drilling research.

Funding: full-time postdoctoral appointment with a salary starting at $63,537+ depending on qualifications. The position is expected to continue until August 31, 2028.

How to apply: submit the application through the Workday portal using the job posting link. Prepare a CV, letter of interest, and three references with contact details. Current UT employees and contingent workers must apply through Workday via Find Jobs.
