About this position

George Washington University’s School of Engineering and Applied Science is advertising a Postdoctoral Fellow position in precision measurement of thermophysical quantities, in collaboration with the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) through the PREP program.

The research is centered on precision optical interferometry and metrology of quantities such as thermodynamic temperature, pressure, refractive index, thermal expansion, density virial coefficients, and magnetic susceptibility. Example projects include development of a cryogenic gas thermometer based on refractive-index gas thermometry, an air-based dilatometer for thermal expansion measurements, and a Faraday balance approach for measuring magnetic susceptibility of gases.

The role includes research and development in precision interferometry, instrumentation of optical/electrical/mechanical/control systems, instrument control and data acquisition in Python, curation and analysis of data, and publication/presentation of results.

Applicants must have a PhD in Physics, Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, or Electrical Engineering. Preferred experience includes optics, laser control and feedback electronics, temperature and pressure measurements, frequency metrology (optical and RF), and uncertainty/error analysis. Candidates must also be eligible for a Department of Commerce background check for facility access.

The post is physically located in the United States (Washington, DC is listed on the page). No deadline, stipend amount, or funding amount is stated in the post.

Funding details

Full funding including tuition fees and living expenses is available for this position. The scholarship covers all educational costs and provides a monthly stipend.
