About this position

Toronto Metropolitan University is advertising a Post-Doctoral Fellow position in the Department of Physics within the Ultrasound and Microbubble Therapy Laboratory, led by Professor Raffi Karshafian. The role is based in Toronto, Canada, with research conducted at the iBEST laboratories. The project focuses on preclinical oncology and the development of an image-guided ultrasound-and-microbubble (USMB) therapy platform that integrates robotic ultrasound, real-time cavitation monitoring, and adaptive treatment planning.

The successful candidate will lead small-animal experiments and provide application/user insights while working closely with the PI, project management, and AI teams. Core work includes designing and conducting in vivo studies, handling and monitoring mice and/or rats, tumour inoculation and monitoring, treatment administration, sample collection, imaging and therapy system operation, data collection, tissue processing, histology, and experimental troubleshooting. The position is highly collaborative and translational, with opportunities to contribute to scientific communication and present findings to scientific and clinical audiences.

Eligibility highlights: a PhD in a relevant biomedical, biological, or engineering discipline; hands-on small-animal research experience, especially with mice; independent in vivo experience; familiarity with animal ethics protocols; strong experimental design and organizational skills; and the ability to work across biological, engineering, and technical disciplines. Desirable experience includes mouse tumour models, oncology/cancer biology (breast or prostate), cell culture, histology/immunohistochemistry, ultrasound or medical imaging, drug delivery, microbubbles, therapeutic interventions, and quantitative data analysis.

Funding and terms: one-year term appointment with potential extension; salary of $50,000 per year plus 18% benefits. The research is supported by NSERC Alliance and Mitacs.

How to apply: email Dr. Raffi Karshafian at [email protected] with the subject line “Application.” Submit one PDF containing a cover letter, CV with publications, two sample papers/publications, and contact information for three professional references.
