About this position

Postdoctoral Fellow in Protein Engineering and Biomaterials at the University of British Columbia (Vancouver, Canada)

The Li Group in the Department of Chemistry, Faculty of Science, at the University of British Columbia is recruiting a postdoctoral fellow for an interdisciplinary project in protein engineering and biomaterials. The work focuses on designing novel recombinant proteins, building macro-scale biomaterials such as hydrogels and elastic networks, and studying their mechanical and biological properties. The project bridges synthetic biology, polymer chemistry, biophysics, and materials science.

Research activities include recombinant protein design and cloning, high-yield expression in E. coli or alternative hosts, multi-step chromatographic purification, biomaterials formulation and characterization, and mechanical testing using rheology, tensile testing, and related biophysical assays. The role also involves collaboration with single-molecule biophysicists, manuscript preparation, conference presentations, and general lab support.

Applicants should hold a Ph.D. in Chemistry, Molecular Biology, Biochemistry, Cell Biology, Bioengineering, Materials Science, or a related field. Strong technical experience in recombinant protein design, cloning, and FPLC/HPLC purification is required. Experience with biomaterials synthesis, hydrogel crosslinking chemistry, or polymer characterization is highly desirable. The group welcomes candidates with strong records in chemistry or engineering who want to transition into biomaterials research.

This is a full-time postdoctoral position for 12 months with the possibility of extension. The expected salary range is CAD 55,000–62,000 per year. The primary work location is the UBC Vancouver Campus. Canadian citizens and permanent residents are given priority, and applicants should indicate their legal status to work in Canada.

Applications are reviewed starting September 15, 2026, and the position remains open until filled. Apply only through UBC’s online job board with a CV, cover letter, and contact details for three referees. The cover letter should address technical and analytical expertise and the earliest available start date.
