About this position
Postdoctoral Fellow opportunity at The University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, United States, within the Alabama Water Institute (AWI) and the CONSERVE Research Group. The role is part of the CONSERVE Innovative Water Systems Program, working with university researchers, USDA Agricultural Research Service partners, and community/stakeholder collaborators on applied water research.
The project focuses on statistical data modelling, hydrology, hydrogeology, geospatial science, environmental science, and water resources. The fellow will develop statistical, geospatial, and AI-assisted models to characterize aquifer recharge, preferential flow pathways, contaminant transport, groundwater behavior, and decision-support tools. The work also integrates geophysical and environmental data to evaluate nature-based approaches to runoff control and soil moisture retention, with manuscript preparation and journal publication expected.
This is a paid postdoctoral appointment with a salary range of $54,000–$67,500. The initial appointment is for one year, with possible renewal contingent on funding and performance for up to three years.
Applicants must hold a PhD in hydrology, hydrogeology, civil or environmental engineering, geography/geospatial science, environmental science, or a closely related field, completed by the start date. Strong experience is sought in statistical modeling of large environmental datasets, spatial statistics/geostatistics, Bayesian or mixed-effects or time-series modeling, machine learning, uncertainty quantification, groundwater or hydrologic modeling, GIS/remote sensing, and programming in R and/or Python. Experience with high-performance computing, strong communication skills, collaboration, and a record of peer-reviewed publishing are also required. A valid U.S. driver's license is required.
The application closes on 2026-10-20. Apply through the university careers portal using the online application system.
