About this position

Postdoctoral Fellow in Statistics / Statistical Science at The Australian National University (Acton Campus, Canberra, Australia).

This is a full-time, fixed-term postdoctoral opening for up to 2 years within the Research School of Finance, Actuarial Studies and Statistics (RSFAS) in the ANU College of Business and Economics. The role is part of the ARC Discovery Project Responsible Statistical Learning: Uncertainty, Fairness and Transparency, led by Associate Professor Yanrong Yang, with collaborators Associate Professor Fei Huang (University of New South Wales) and Professor Samuel Muller (Macquarie University).

The research focus is on statistical methodology and theory, especially quantifying the trade-off between fairness and statistical accuracy in a fundamental statistical framework. The initial motivation is gender-fair insurance pricing, and the successful candidate may also work on scalable computational algorithms and practical applications.

Applicants should have a strong research background or clear potential in Statistics and/or Statistical Science. A PhD in Statistics or a closely related discipline is expected, or the candidate should be near completion; if the PhD has not yet been awarded, the thesis must be submitted before employment begins.

Funding details: salary package is $91,546 - $114,906 per annum plus 17% superannuation. The position is linked to a nationally funded ARC Discovery Project grant.

How to apply: submit a statement addressing the selection criteria and a current CV including at least three referees. Applications that do not address the selection criteria may not be considered. Closing date: 17 August 2026, 11:55 PM AEST.
