About this position

Postdoctoral Fellow in Structural Studies of Mitochondrial DNA Replication at the University of Gothenburg, Institute of Biomedicine, Sweden.

This postdoctoral opening is part of a research project funded by a Wallenberg Scholar grant. The project sits at the intersection of structural biology, biochemistry, molecular biology, and cell biology, with a strong focus on mitochondrial DNA replication, mtDNA maintenance, gene expression, and the molecular basis of mitochondrial disease.

The successful candidate will work in an interdisciplinary team and will study protein and protein-DNA complexes involved in mtDNA replication. A major part of the work involves single-particle cryo-electron microscopy (cryo-EM), including sample preparation, grid optimization, data processing, and structural analysis. The project also includes protein complex preparation and biochemical characterization, and combining structural findings with in vitro biochemical analyses to test mechanistic models and the effects of disease-associated mutations.

Eligibility and requirements: a doctoral degree in structural biology, biochemistry, molecular biology, or a related field is required. Applicants must have documented experience in cryo-EM structural studies and protein purification/protein biochemistry. Excellent spoken and written English is required. Experience with protein-DNA complexes, mitochondrial systems, cloning, mutagenesis, protein expression, cell culture, and biochemical analyses is considered an advantage.

Employment: full-time, temporary appointment for two years with the possibility of a one-year extension. The position is located at the Institute of Biomedicine, University of Gothenburg.

Application deadline: 2026-10-02. Apply via the university recruitment portal and include a cover letter, CV with publication list, contact details for two references, and proof of completed PhD.
