About this position

Colorado School of Mines is advertising three postdoctoral fellow positions in the Department of Civil & Environmental Engineering with Prof. Reza Hedayat. The research centers on sustainable cementitious materials, supplementary cementitious materials (SCMs), lightweight aggregates, geopolymers, and the reuse of red mud and other residual materials such as mine tailings generated after critical mineral recovery.

Each fellow will focus on one product track: SCM and concrete, lightweight aggregate and concrete, or geopolymer brick. The work includes characterization of untreated red mud and treated residual powder using XRF, XRD, SEM/EDS, particle-size analysis, FTIR, and TGA/DSC; evaluation of pretreatment and activation methods such as mechanical, thermal, and dealkalization approaches; design, production, and testing of mortar and concrete mixtures; development of geopolymer bricks, lightweight aggregates, and ceramic tiles via extrusion, pelletization, pressing, curing, and sintering; and durability/environmental testing including freeze-thaw, alkali-silica reactivity, and leaching. The positions also involve scale-up support, report/manuscript/IP preparation, and mentoring of graduate and undergraduate researchers.

Preferred background: research experience in cementitious materials, concrete durability, SCMs, ceramics, alternative binders, industrial byproducts, mine tailings, or red mud; hands-on experience with SEM/EDS, XRD, XRF, FTIR, TGA/DSC, ICP-AES, particle-size analysis, or micro-CT; and knowledge of cement hydration, pozzolanic reactions, SCM reactivity, alkali activation, ceramic processing, or microstructure-property relationships.

Location: Golden, Colorado, USA. Duration: 1 year with possible extension to a second year. Start: November 1, 2026, or shortly thereafter. The post says applications are open until all positions are filled, so candidates should apply as soon as possible.
