About this position

Postdoctoral Fellowship in the MINIONS project at the University of Aveiro, Portugal. This opening is for 1 postdoctoral fellowship at CICECO - Aveiro Institute of Materials, within the R&D project MINIONS - MImicking NItrogenase-inspired catalysis ON Sulfur-terminated mxenes (reference 2024.16387.PEX).

The project sits in the scientific area of Chemistry and spans computational chemistry, surface science, catalysis, and materials-focused modeling. The work plan includes computational studies of nitrogen hydrogenation on sulfur-functionalized MXene models, calculation of reaction energies and activation barriers, and development and application of microkinetic models under standard and operando catalytic conditions. The fellow will also help disseminate results through reports, presentations, and publications.

This position is hosted by the Department of Chemistry at the University of Aveiro and carried out under the scientific supervision of José R. B. Gomes and José D. Gouveia. The fellowship is funded by the Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT, I.P.) through national funds (PIDDAC).

Eligibility and profile: applicants must hold a PhD or equivalent in Science or Engineering. Preferred backgrounds include Chemical Engineering, Materials Science, Chemistry, and Physics. The call gives particular preference to candidates with hands-on experience in molecular simulation methods such as density functional theory, molecular dynamics, and microkinetic modelling, as well as a demonstrated interest in computational surface science and catalysis. The doctorate must have been obtained within the three years prior to the application date, and the postdoctoral research must be carried out in a host entity different from the doctoral institution.

Funding and duration: the monthly maintenance allowance is €1,901.00, with possible reimbursement for voluntary social security if applicable. The fellowship lasts 6 months from November 2026, with possible 3-month renewals up to the approved funding limit and subject to the regulations in force.

How to apply: applications are open from 2026-10-12 to 2026-10-23 and must be submitted by email to [email protected]. Required documents include the application letter, CV, declaration of honor, identity document, PhD certificate, relevant publications/works, and any other supporting documents. The full notice and application form are available via the provided links.

What's required

Applicants must hold a PhD or equivalent in Science or Engineering disciplines, with preference for Chemical Engineering, Materials Science, Chemistry, and Physics. Strong preference is given to candidates with previous experience in molecular simulation, including density functional theory, molecular dynamics, microkinetic modelling, or other relevant molecular simulation techniques, and with aptitude for computational surface science and catalysis. The doctorate must have been obtained within the three years prior to the application date, the postdoctoral research must be carried out in a host entity different from the doctoral institution, the activities must not require postdoctoral experience, and the research should have a development timeframe of three years or less. Candidates must also comply with the applicable FCT research grant regulations and, if the degree was awarded abroad, have it recognized by a Portuguese higher education institution by the hiring date.

How to apply

Submit an application by email to [email protected] within the call period 2026-10-12 to 2026-10-23. Include the application letter, dated and signed CV, declaration of honor, ID/passport copy, PhD certificate, relevant scientific works, and any other supporting documents. Provide an email address for notifications.
