About this position
Jessica da Silva, Principal Scientist at the South African National Biodiversity Institute (SANBI), is looking for a potential postdoctoral candidate for an NRF Postdoctoral Fellowship (PDP) position in conservation genetics and biodiversity assessments.
The proposed project sits at the intersection of population modelling, conservation policy, and biodiversity science, with opportunities to contribute to South African and international conservation initiatives. The successful candidate would lead simulation-based research on how incorporating genetic information into IUCN Green Status assessments could affect evaluations of species recovery and conservation dependence, with a focus on South African species where possible.
Ideal candidates should be highly organised, proactive, enthusiastic, and able to work independently while collaborating with researchers and practitioners across disciplines. A strong interest or background in conservation genetics, population genomics, biodiversity assessments, spatial conservation planning, and science-policy applications is preferred. Experience in bioinformatics, genetic/genomic data analysis, population viability modelling, or simulation tools such as SLiM would be a significant advantage.
This is not a standard advertised job but a nomination opportunity for an NRF PDP fellowship, subject to eligibility and successful funding. Applicants must be South African citizens or permanent residents and meet NRF PDP eligibility requirements.
Interested candidates should contact the poster before the end of November.
