About this position
Postdoctoral Fellowship in Intensive Care at the Heart Institute (InCor), Hospital das Clínicas, University of São Paulo Medical School (FMUSP), Brazil.
The fellow will join the Medical Investigation Laboratory LIM-09–Pulmonology and the Respiratory Intensive Care Unit to work on a prospective, randomized, adaptive clinical trial. The project studies whether percutaneous electrical phrenic nerve stimulation and intermittent controlled mechanical ventilation can prevent ventilator-induced diaphragmatic dysfunction (VIDD) in critically ill patients.
This opportunity is aimed at candidates with a PhD in Pulmonology or Physiotherapy and strong ICU/respiratory research experience. Required skills include percutaneous electrical phrenic nerve stimulation, invasive mechanical ventilation care, respiratory muscle ultrasonography, esophageal and gastric balloon catheters, NAVA catheter (EAdi) monitoring, clinical research database management, and R software. Desirable experience includes difficult or prolonged weaning from mechanical ventilation, prior ICU clinical trials or observational studies, and knowledge of magnetic phrenic nerve stimulation.
Funding is provided through a FAPESP Post-Doctoral fellowship with a monthly stipend of R$ 12,570.00 plus a research contingency fund equal to 10% of the annual fellowship value for research-related expenses.
Applicants of any nationality may apply. To apply, send your PhD diploma, updated CV, and a one-page statement of interest by email with the subject line “D-PROTECT Study Postdoctoral Fellowship.” The post lists Brazil as the work location and the deadline as 19 October 2026.
