About this position

The Department of Mathematics and Statistics at the University of Victoria is seeking candidates for nomination for a Postdoctoral Fellowship in mathematics and statistics. The research field is open, with priority given to applicants whose work aligns with current faculty expertise.

The fellowship starts between August 1, 2027 and January 1, 2028 (other dates require approval). It is a one-year appointment, renewable for an additional year based on satisfactory progress. The position is partially supported by PIMS (Pacific Institute for the Mathematical Sciences), and the salary is stated to be at least 60,000 CAD annually, depending on experience.

Eligibility is for recent PhDs or graduate students who expect to receive a PhD by December 31, 2027. Applicants should identify proposed research supervisor(s) in the department and submit a research statement showing the connection between the proposed research and the supervisor(s)’ expertise.

Required application materials include a CV, publication list (with the three most important publications highlighted), research statement, cover letter naming proposed research supervisor(s), equity, diversity and inclusion statement, and three reference letters. At least one reference should ideally come from outside the institution where the candidate studied or is studying for the PhD.

Applications should be submitted on MathJobs by November 10, 2026. A second-stage application may follow in November for the PIMS annual Postdoctoral Fellowship Competition, with a separate deadline of December 1, 2026, and only for candidates with pre-approved support from a University of Victoria faculty member.
