About this position

North-West University (Potchefstroom Campus), Faculty of Engineering, Centre of Excellence in Carbon-Based Fuels, is advertising a Postdoctoral Fellowship in Sustainable Electrochemistry for Biomass Valorisation.

The research programme focuses on the electrochemical upgrading of biomass-derived materials such as bio-oil and lignin into value-added chemicals and fuels. The work also includes related areas such as electrocatalysis, electrochemical conversion, and electrochemical reactor development. The successful candidate will join a multidisciplinary research group with access to multiple electrochemical reactor systems, comprehensive analytical facilities, and established international collaborations.

The fellowship is aimed at highly motivated researchers with a strong background in electrochemistry, chemical engineering, chemistry, or a related discipline. The role involves leading experimental research, with additional opportunities to contribute to transport modelling and computational fluid dynamics (CFD) studies of electrochemical systems, including mass-transfer limitations, gas-bubble dynamics, and local pH gradients.

Minimum requirements include a relevant PhD obtained within five years before appointment, demonstrated experimental research experience in electrochemistry/electrocatalysis/electrochemical engineering/electrochemical conversion, a strong publication record, and excellent scientific writing and communication skills. Interest in multiphysics or CFD modelling is advantageous.

The position is based in Potchefstroom, South Africa. Applications close on 14 September 2026, and duties commence as soon as possible. Enquiries may be directed to Dr. Saartjie Gouws or Prof Hein Neomagus.
