About this position

A postdoctoral fellowship is available at the University of Aveiro, within the Centre for Environmental and Marine Studies (CESAM), under the +ATLANTIC protocol project “Dynamic downscaling of European CAMS air quality forecasts to high resolution over Portugal” (CV 181/2024).

The project is centered on improving operational air quality forecasting for Portugal. The fellow will work on updating forecasting system models in line with current scientific practice and Air Quality Directive requirements, refreshing emission inventories to reflect the latest reporting year, monitoring operational forecasts on a daily basis, assessing system performance using the DELTA-Tool, and developing innovative post-processing approaches for chemical transport model forecasts using statistical analysis and comparison with observational data.

The position is hosted by CESAM / the Department of Environment and Planning at the University of Aveiro, under the supervision of Professor/Doctor Ana Isabel Couto Neto da Silva Miranda. The scientific area is Environmental Sciences and Engineering, with a strong emphasis on air quality modeling, forecast evaluation, and model improvement.

Eligibility requires a doctorate in Environmental Sciences and Engineering, obtained less than three years before the application date. Experience in air quality modeling will be valued, and the selection process also weighs programming experience (Python, Fortran, Linux automation), scientific publications or conference output in air quality, and English proficiency.

The fellowship is funded by the University of Aveiro’s own revenues under Sales Contract No. 181/2024. It offers a monthly maintenance allowance of €1,901.00 and lasts 12 months from January 2027, with the possibility of renewal in 6-month periods up to the approved funding limit and within the applicable regulations.

Applications are open from 16 August 2026 to 31 August 2026 at 17:00 UTC. Candidates must submit a letter of application, CV, doctoral degree certificate, and supporting documents by email to [email protected], using the official application form available from the University of Aveiro. This is a full-time temporary postdoctoral opportunity for a researcher interested in environmental science, air quality modeling, and operational forecasting systems.
