About this position
MERCI (Momentum for European Research Career at ICIQ) is a postdoctoral co-funded programme at the Institut Català d’Investigació Química (ICIQ) in Tarragona, Spain. It recruits four highly talented and autonomous postdoctoral researchers who will develop independent projects within ICIQ’s three main research areas: sustainable catalysis, renewable energies, and molecular medicine.
Each fellow will be mentored by an internationally renowned Group Leader and will follow a structured career development path with progress monitoring, a personalised Career Development Plan, training, networking, and secondment opportunities with partner institutions across Europe. The programme is designed to support researchers toward R3-level independence and future Group Leader roles.
Research themes mentioned by the mentors include small-molecule and macromolecule chemistry for functional materials, computational modeling of chemical reactivity, mechanistic studies and new reaction development, organic synthesis and organometallic chemistry, sustainable materials and devices for energy and chemical transformations, C-H and C-C functionalization, catalytic and selective organic synthesis, molecular redox catalysis and artificial photosynthesis, and light-driven systems for energy, health, and environmental remediation.
Eligibility highlights: applicants must hold a doctoral degree by the deadline, have 2–10 years of postdoctoral experience, and must not have spent more than 12 months in Spain during the 36 months before the deadline. Applicants must not be permanently employed by ICIQ at the deadline. The programme is open to any nationality.
Funding is substantial: Phase 1 offers a 36-month full-time contract with an average gross salary of 60,000 EUR/year funded by the EU; Phase 2 adds 24 months at 50,000 EUR/year funded by ICIQ. Additional support includes a family allowance when applicable, a research budget, a welcome stipend, and training/networking funds. Spanish Social Security coverage is included.
To apply, candidates should review the MERCI application information, eligibility, selection process, timeline, evaluation, committee, and templates on the ICIQ MERCI page and follow the application instructions there. The post does not state a specific deadline in the text provided.
