About this position

Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya (UPC·BarcelonaTech) is inviting applications for a Postdoctoral Position — Beatriu de Pinós fellowship with the Concrete, Sustainability and Smart Structures (C3S) group in Barcelona. The position sits within the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering and is aimed at an R2 recognised researcher profile.

C3S works at the intersection of construction and digitalization, combining research on optimization of construction processes, new and alternative cementitious materials, sensor-based monitoring of concrete performance, and sustainability assessment of infrastructure. The group participates in national projects and large-scale European projects, and collaborates with academic and industrial partners in Barcelona.

The selected postdoctoral researcher will develop an independent project in one of four lines: early-age microcracking: monitoring and sensor development; AI-driven management of sustainable concrete; digital twins of construction sites and information management; or mathematical models for infrastructure impact and infrastructure economics. The role is therefore well suited to candidates with backgrounds in civil engineering, concrete technology, sensing/monitoring, digital construction, sustainability, and data-driven infrastructure research.

Eligibility is highly specific. Applicants must have obtained their PhD between 1 January 2019 and 31 December 2024 (by thesis defence date), have at least 2 years of postdoctoral experience outside Spain (possibly across multiple institutions), and satisfy the mobility rule of not having resided or worked in Spain for more than 12 months in the last 3 years. Previous Beatriu de Pinós grant holders are not eligible, even if only partially. The call also asks for a competitive publication record and English C1 or equivalent.

How to apply: email research@c3s-barcelona.com with the subject line [BP] – Surname Name. Include a full academic CV, the exact PhD defence date, a statement regarding residence/work in Spain over the last 3 years, evidence of postdoctoral stays outside Spain with dates, and a one-page description of the research you would develop within the chosen line.

Deadline: 30 September 2026, 23:59 UTC. The position is full-time and temporary, based in Barcelona, Spain.
