About this position

Postdoctoral position in Antibiotic Development at the Biozentrum, University of Basel, in Switzerland.

This opportunity focuses on infection biology, microbiology, cell biology, and antibiotic development, with a project on non-tuberculous mycobacteria (NTM) in a physiologically relevant human airway infection model. The work is shared between the Boeck Lab (Department of Biomedicine) and the Jenal Lab (Biozentrum), and is embedded in the Swiss research consortium NCCR AntiResist.

The project aims to establish NTM infection in human air-liquid interface (ALI) airway epithelium, characterize infection dynamics, and develop a tissue-based platform to measure antibiotic efficacy. You will study bacterial growth and killing dynamics, intracellular drug activity, tissue integrity during treatment, and compare tissue-based efficacy with conventional drug testing. The role also involves testing novel antimicrobial compounds alongside standard-of-care antibiotics and working closely with an industry partner, A&J Science.

Eligibility highlights: PhD in infection biology, microbiology, cell biology, or a related discipline; experience with bacterial culture, genetic manipulation, imaging, and mammalian cell culture is required, with organoid or ALI culture experience especially valuable. The ideal candidate can work independently, troubleshoot experiments, and collaborate in a multidisciplinary consortium.

Funding: fully funded 2-year postdoctoral position with competitive salary, access to high-content imaging and confocal microscopy, and support for independent funding applications and career development.

How to apply: submit the online application via the portal and upload one PDF containing a motivation letter, CV, academic transcripts, reference contacts for at least two referees, and a brief project idea. Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis until the position is filled.
