About this position
Technical University of Munich is advertising a 2-year funded postdoctoral position in coastal sea level rise, combining machine learning, earth observation, and climate change research.
The project focuses on reconstructing global 3-D coastal sea surface height by combining long-term satellite altimetry, high-resolution SWOT observations, tide gauge data, and machine learning-based spatio-temporal interpolation methods. The work sits at the intersection of computer science, earth science, environmental science, physics, and statistics.
The postdoc will be jointly supervised by Prof. Jonathan Bamber (University of Bristol / TUM IAS), Prof. Xiaoxiang Zhu (Technical University of Munich / Munich Center for Machine Learning), and Dr. Marcello Passaro (DGFI-TUM). The team offers collaboration with leading experts in Earth observation, climate science, and sea-level research.
Applicants should hold a completed PhD in Computer Science, Geoscience, Physics, Data Science, or a comparable field, and should have experience with machine learning or AI, Python or similar tools, strong English skills, and the ability to work independently and collaboratively. Background in geosciences or Earth observation and experience with spatio-temporal data are advantageous.
The position is paid at TV-L E13, 100% and runs for 2 years. Applications should include a motivation letter, CV, and academic transcripts, and should be emailed to [email protected] by 2026-07-03. The subject line should read: Post doc application for coastal sea level.
