Postdoctoral Position in Coastal Sea Level Rise, Machine Learning, and Earth Observation at Technical University of Munich

Postdoctoral position at Technical University of Munich (TUM) in coastal sea level rise , machine learning , and earth observation . The project focuses on reconstructing global 3-D coastal sea surface height by combining long-term satellite altimetry, high-resolution SWOT observations, tide gauge data, and machine learning methods. The work sits at the intersection of Earth Science , Environmental Science , Computer Science , Physics , and Statistics , with strong relevance to climate change and coastal impact assessment. You will work with an international supervisory team: Prof. Jonathan Bamber (University of Bristol / TUM IAS), Prof. Xiaoxiang Zhu (Technical University of Munich / Munich Center for Machine Learning), and Dr. Marcello Passaro (DGFI-TUM). The role includes preparing EO and in-situ datasets, developing ML-based spatio-temporal interpolation methods, analyzing geophysical impacts, conducting literature research, publishing scientific papers, and contributing to teaching. Eligibility highlights: completed PhD in Computer Science, Geoscience, Physics, Data Science, or a related field; experience in machine learning or AI; Python/software skills; excellent English; ability to work independently and collaboratively. Background in geosciences, Earth observation, or spatio-temporal data processing is an advantage. Funding: 2-year postdoc contract, TV-L E13, 100%. Deadline: 3 July 2026. How to apply: send a motivation letter, CV, and academic transcripts by email to [email protected], preferably in English, and include “Post doc application for coastal sea level” in the subject line.
