About this position

Postdoctoral position at Technical University of Munich (TUM) in coastal sea level rise, machine learning, and earth observation.

The project focuses on reconstructing global 3-D coastal sea surface height by combining long-term satellite altimetry, high-resolution SWOT observations, tide gauge data, and machine learning methods. The work sits at the intersection of Earth Science, Environmental Science, Computer Science, Physics, and Statistics, with strong relevance to climate change and coastal impact assessment.

You will work with an international supervisory team: Prof. Jonathan Bamber (University of Bristol / TUM IAS), Prof. Xiaoxiang Zhu (Technical University of Munich / Munich Center for Machine Learning), and Dr. Marcello Passaro (DGFI-TUM). The role includes preparing EO and in-situ datasets, developing ML-based spatio-temporal interpolation methods, analyzing geophysical impacts, conducting literature research, publishing scientific papers, and contributing to teaching.

Eligibility highlights: completed PhD in Computer Science, Geoscience, Physics, Data Science, or a related field; experience in machine learning or AI; Python/software skills; excellent English; ability to work independently and collaboratively. Background in geosciences, Earth observation, or spatio-temporal data processing is an advantage.

Funding: 2-year postdoc contract, TV-L E13, 100%.

Deadline: 3 July 2026.

How to apply: send a motivation letter, CV, and academic transcripts by email to [email protected], preferably in English, and include “Post doc application for coastal sea level” in the subject line.
