About this position

Umeå University in Sweden is advertising a 2-year postdoctoral position in Environmental Chemistry at the Department of Chemistry.

The project focuses on hydrothermal carbonization (HTC), especially the recovery of carbon and organic material from HTC filtrates. The successful candidate will study how self-generated carbon (SGC) forms in process water and what filtrate chemistry controls its formation. The work sits within the RE-FIL project, which aims to turn HTC filtrate from a waste stream into a resource.

Research tasks include characterization of filtrates and products using chromatographic, spectroscopic, and microscopic techniques, with an emphasis on the interface between SGC formation and microbial production of biodegradable plastics (PHA). The postdoctoral researcher will join the Environmental Chemistry group and have access to the Trace Analysis Platform and the Vibrational Spectroscopy Core Facility. Some work may also be carried out at Karlstad University.

Eligibility highlights: a doctoral degree in chemistry, environmental chemistry, materials chemistry, chemical engineering, or a closely related field; documented experimental laboratory experience; and experience with at least one of chromatography-mass spectrometry, elemental analysis, or surface/material characterization. Very good English and a publication record are required. Desirable experience includes hydrothermal carbonization, elevated temperature/pressure work, pilot-scale work, surface chemistry, aqueous-phase organic chemistry, and interdisciplinary research.

The position is full-time for two years, with access from 1 March 2027 or by agreement. Application deadline: 2026-11-30. Apply through Umeå University’s electronic recruitment system.

What's required

A doctoral degree in chemistry, environmental chemistry, materials chemistry, chemical engineering, or a closely related subject is required, and it must be completed no later than the appointment decision. Priority is given to candidates who completed the doctorate within the last three years, unless special reasons apply. Applicants must have documented experience designing and performing experimental laboratory work in chemistry and chemical/material characterization using instrumental analytical techniques. Experience with at least one of chromatography-mass spectrometry, elemental analysis, or surface/material characterization techniques is required. Very good spoken and written English is required, along with documented ability to publish scientific results, normally shown by first-author peer-reviewed international journal publications. Experience with hydrothermal carbonization, elevated temperature/pressure work, pilot-scale work, surface chemistry, aqueous-phase organic chemistry, or interdisciplinary/international research is desirable.

How to apply

Prepare a full application in English or Swedish including a cover letter, CV with publication list, doctoral degree certificate or proof of expected completion, other diplomas, course list and grades, and any additional supporting documents. Submit the application through Umeå University’s electronic recruitment system via the Apply button before 30 November 2026. Contact Prof. Stina Jansson for further details.
