About this position

Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences (SLU) is advertising a postdoctoral position at the Department of Forest Resource Management in Umeå, Sweden.

The project, WindyForests, focuses on forest landscape modelling, forest management strategies, biodiversity, ecosystem services, and the interaction between forest planning and wind power development. The successful candidate will use the Heureka decision support system together with simulation and optimisation methods to study conflicts and synergies among sustainability goals such as biomass production, carbon sequestration, recreational values, and wind energy.

This is a two-year postdoctoral appointment with the possibility of extension. The role is full time (100%) and intended for a junior researcher.

Eligibility highlights: applicants must hold a PhD in forestry, ecology, environmental science, systems analysis, mathematics, operations research, or a related field. The thesis should have included quantitative modelling and/or optimisation as a central component. Experience with optimisation methods, long-term forest landscape modelling, ecosystem services, decision support systems, and especially Heureka is advantageous. Strong English communication skills are required.

Application deadline: 11 August 2026.

Apply through the SLU/ReachMee online portal using the vacancy page link. Contact persons listed on the announcement include Karin Öhman, Isabella Hallberg-Sramek, and Hans Petersson.
