About this position
Postdoctoral position in COMPEL-Energy Sciences at Lund University focused on thermal runaway modeling for lithium-ion batteries.
The position is based at the Division of Heat Transfer, Department of Energy Sciences, Faculty of Engineering (LTH), Lund University, Sweden. The project sits within COMPEL (“COMPetence for the ELectrification of the transport system”), a Swedish strategic initiative involving Lund University, Chalmers University of Technology, and Uppsala University in collaboration with industry.
The research topic is the development of GPU-accelerated, high-fidelity simulation models for thermal runaway in battery cells, modules, packs, and complete battery systems. The work emphasizes OpenFOAM, computational fluid dynamics (CFD), high-performance computing (HPC), reacting flows, heat transfer, and battery safety. The project will be carried out in collaboration with Scania Industrial Battery Systems and COMPEL partners.
Key duties include developing and implementing GPU-based numerical methods, optimizing scientific software for modern heterogeneous architectures, analyzing simulation results, publishing in journals and conferences, collaborating with academic and industrial partners, contributing to funding applications, and participating in teaching and supervision.
Eligibility highlights: a PhD or equivalent in the subject area, very good English, and documented experience in programming and/or energy system modelling. Strongly preferred are skills in CUDA, HIP, SYCL, OpenACC, MPI, OpenMP, profiling/optimization tools, and experience with large-scale simulations and interdisciplinary research.
Employment details: full-time, fixed-term for 2 years. Teaching may account for up to 20% of working hours. The last application date is 2026-10-11.
How to apply: submit the application via Lund University’s recruitment system with a CV, personal letter, degree certificate, and any supporting documents you wish to include.
