About this position

Postdoctoral position in Human Interaction with Humanoid Unitree G1 at the Department of Computing Science, Umeå University, Sweden.

This two-year full-time postdoctoral opening is within the WASP project and focuses on human-robot interaction, humanoid robotics, robot control, computer vision, SLAM, imitation learning, and cognitive robotics. The project aims to implement a cognitive agent embodied in a humanoid robot Unitree G1 that collaborates with a human partner to solve spatial problems such as 3D puzzles.

Working tasks include scene understanding, reasoning over object relations, learning object affordances through interaction, updating a knowledge base, programming a humanoid platform using ROS2, solving SLAM, designing HRI experiments, evaluating data, and publishing scientific papers. The position also involves sharing code and benchmarks in open repositories.

Eligibility highlights: applicants must have a doctoral degree or equivalent by the appointment decision, preferably within the last three years unless special reasons apply. Required background includes a PhD in a relevant field, experience programming humanoid platforms, an engineering degree in mechanical engineering, automatic control, mechatronics, robotics, or artificial intelligence, strong C/C++, Python, and ROS skills, solid numerical analysis, advanced computer vision, and experience in human-robot interaction. Publications in ICRA, IROS, or HRI and hands-on humanoid experience are especially valued.

Funding: the position is funded by the Wallenberg AI, Autonomous Systems and Software Program (WASP). Salary is monthly; no stipend amount is stated.

Application deadline: 2026-09-04. Apply through Umeå University’s electronic recruitment system and include a cover letter, CV with DOI-linked publications, degree documentation, transcripts, thesis, up to five relevant articles, other supporting documents, and two references. The application may be written in English or Swedish.
