About this position

Postdoctoral position at the University of Groningen (Netherlands) in a multidisciplinary consortium project on hybrid nanopore sensors for single-molecule protein and peptide analysis.

The project brings together the Maglia lab at Groningen, the Vorobieva lab at VUB-VIB Center for Structural Biology (Brussels), and imec (Leuven). The research combines biological nanopore engineering, de novo protein design, and solid-state nanofabrication to develop next-generation hybrid nanopore devices.

Core tasks include engineering and characterising biological nanopores, collaborating on validation of de novo-designed nanopores, integrating biological and solid-state platforms, and performing single-molecule experiments using electrical recordings and possibly optical/fluorescence readouts. The role also includes project management, reporting, publication, conference presentations, and supervision of PhD students and junior lab members.

Eligibility highlights: PhD in Biochemistry, Chemistry, Biophysics, Molecular Biology, Bionanotechnology, or a related field; experience with protein engineering and purification; strong advantage for membrane proteins, ion channels, or nanopores; desirable experience with single-molecule biophysical techniques; strong English and communication skills; willingness to collaborate internationally and travel.

Funding/employment: Temporary postdoctoral contract at 38 hours/week with standard University of Groningen benefits, including 232 vacation hours/year, 8.3% end-of-year bonus, and 8% holiday allowance. No stipend amount is listed.

Deadline: 2026-11-03. Apply through AcademicTransfer and upload a CV and cover letter.

What's required

A completed or nearly completed PhD in Biochemistry, Chemistry, Biophysics, Molecular Biology, Bionanotechnology or a related field is required. Applicants should have demonstrated experience with protein engineering, expression and purification; experience with membrane proteins, ion channels or nanopores is a strong advantage. Experience with single-molecule biophysical techniques such as electrical/electrophysiological recordings, single-channel analysis, or fluorescence-based single-molecule methods is highly desirable. A strong publication record relative to career stage, good written and spoken English, and strong communication, organisational, mentoring, and collaboration skills are expected. Willingness to work with partner labs in Brussels and Leuven and travel for joint experiments and consortium meetings is required.
