About this position
EPFL (École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne) is recruiting for a Postdoctoral Position in Image-Based Drug Screening Against Bacterial Pathogens in Lausanne, Switzerland.
The project is hosted in the laboratory of Prof. Alex Persat (EPFL School of Life Sciences; p-lab.science) and aims to establish a new image-based drug screening platform targeting gram-negative pathogens, including Klebsiella pneumoniae, Acinetobacter baumannii, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa.
The work combines microbiology, biophysics, bioengineering, single-cell/single-bacterium imaging, high-content screening, and drug discovery. The successful candidate will design and build a microscopy-based phenotypic screening pipeline, develop assays to distinguish mechanisms of action, create image analysis and quantification workflows with Python/AI support, and follow up screening hits using genetic, chemical-biology, or biophysical approaches. The role also includes collaboration on tissue-engineered infection models (airway and gut) and co-supervision of PhD students.
Applicants should have a PhD in microbiology, biophysics, bioengineering, or a related field, ideally with a first-author publication and practical experience in quantitative microscopy. EPFL offers a competitive salary, access to strong imaging and infection-model infrastructure, and integration into the NCCR AntiResist consortium. Support for fellowship applications such as EMBO, HFSP, and MSCA is mentioned.
Applications are accepted only through the EPFL careers portal. Required materials include a cover letter, CV with publication list, and contact details for three referees. The contract start date is negotiable; the position is for 1 year, renewable.
