About this position

The Geology and Sustainable Mining Institute (GSMI) at Mohammed VI Polytechnic University (UM6P), located in Benguerir, Morocco, is offering an 18-month postdoctoral position focused on mineral thermal processing and pyrometallurgy. This role is part of strategic, industry-linked research projects funded by the OCP Group, a major player in the mining sector. The successful candidate will develop innovative high-temperature processes for transforming, upgrading, or enriching mineral resources, with a particular emphasis on complex or secondary ores. Research activities will include studying the thermal and physicochemical properties of minerals, designing and executing thermal treatment experiments such as calcination, roasting, and smelting, and optimizing pyrometallurgical flow sheets to produce value-added materials or metals. The postdoctoral researcher will contribute to both fundamental scientific understanding and industrial applications, including product characterization, process design and modeling, and techno-economic evaluation of pyrometallurgical routes. Applicants should have a Ph.D. in Metallurgy, Process Engineering, Materials Chemistry, or a related discipline, with a specialization in pyrometallurgy or mineral thermal processing. Essential skills include expertise in material characterization techniques (XRD, TGA/DSC, SEM), hands-on experience with laboratory-scale thermal treatment equipment, and strong scientific communication abilities in English. Proficiency in French is advantageous. Preferred qualifications include experience with pyrochimical processing of various ores, familiarity with thermodynamic simulation software, and prior involvement in industry-oriented or collaborative research. The application process requires submission of a cover letter, CV, and contact information for two professional references by June 30th, 2025. UM6P is a leading African institution dedicated to research and innovation, offering a modern campus and a collaborative research environment. This position provides an opportunity to contribute to cutting-edge research in mineral processing and extractive metallurgy, with direct industry relevance and impact.
