About this position

Stanford University is recruiting a postdoctoral scholar in the Cegelski Lab for research on NMR spectroscopy of complex biological and materials systems.

The position is based in the Department of Chemistry at Stanford University and is led by Lynette Cegelski. The lab uses especially solid-state NMR to study molecular composition, structure, interactions, and chemical modifications in systems that are difficult to analyze with conventional structural methods.

Research topics may include intact bacterial cells, cell walls, biofilm extracellular matrices, amyloid-polysaccharide assemblies, polysaccharides such as pEtN cellulose, polymers, catalysts, antibacterial agents, and related biological or materials systems. The role is highly interdisciplinary and may also involve fluorescence microscopy, electron microscopy, mass spectrometry, biochemical assays, analytical separations, microbial genetics, and other biophysical or materials-characterization techniques.

Applicants should have a PhD or equivalent doctoral degree by the start date and substantial hands-on NMR experience. Solid-state NMR experience is strongly preferred, but candidates with strong solution-state NMR backgrounds and interest in learning solid-state NMR are encouraged to apply. The lab especially welcomes scientists who can design and troubleshoot experiments, analyze multidimensional data, and work collaboratively across chemistry, biochemistry, biophysics, microbiology, materials science, and engineering.

The appointment is expected to start in late 2026 or early 2027. The position pays at least the Stanford postdoctoral minimum salary; the FY27 minimum is $79,056.

What's required

Experience in solid-state NMR is strongly preferred; solution-state NMR candidates with interest in learning solid-state NMR are also encouraged. Relevant experience may include magic-angle-spinning solid-state NMR, biomolecular/polymer/materials/catalyst NMR, multinuclear experiments, isotopic labeling, spectral processing, microscopy, mass spectrometry, biochemical or microbiological methods.
